Source: citifmonline.com - The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Christian-Yohunu believes the recent armed robbery attacks at Amanfrom in Accra might have been carried out by evicted Sodom and Gomorrah residents. “We suspect people from that area. These people were evacuated and were asked to relocate but they didn’t. Some of them came back and are hiding in the communities,” he claimed.
“We know there are good ones among them but those with criminal intents have decided to join gangs to cause trouble. Some of them are even ex-convicts who had gone to settle in the area. Once, they have been evacuated, they decided to come back because they have no where to go.” Meanwhile the Police have arrested 37 suspects in connection with the recent robberies at Amanfrom. The police organised a swoop in the area on Saturday morning and arrested 36 males and a female ranging between 18-35 years. Speaking to Citi News on the update of the recent Amanfrom robbery attacks, DCOP Tettey-Yohunu further stated that the spate of robbery in the past month is worrying. DCOP Tettey-Yohunu however insists that the police is ready to fight all criminals and whoever is caught will be dealt with irrespective of the area they are coming from. He therefore called on the public to assist the police with vital information that could lead to the arrest of any suspected individuals. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly carried out a demolition exercise at the Sodom and Gommorrah site in Accra a month ago to make way for the dredging of Odaw River and the Korle Lagoon. However most of those residents who were displeased by the exercise subsequently staged a demonstration and also issued some threats. Sodom and Gomorrah, with an estimated population of 60,000, lies along the banks of the Odaw River and the Korle lagoon, and it is one of Africa’s biggest slums. |
