A younger brother of the New Patriotic Party's national chairman, Paul Afoko has been fingered as one of the two assailants who poured acid on the Upper East Regional chairman of the party leading to his death. Adams Mahama was attacked Wednesday night and 'showered' with acid as he drove home from work by two assailants.
He died Thursday morning as he was being prepared to be transferred from the Bolgatanga Central Hospital to Accra for further treatment. Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show ‘Dwaso Nsem’, an aide to the late chairman Usman Zakaria said the chairman, before he was sent to the hospital, named the younger brother of Paul Afoko as one of the attackers. According to him, Paul Afoko’s brother undertook the gruesome act with one Asagba who is also said to be a member of the NPP. “He named him, the younger brother of Afoko and Afakpa as the persons and indicated further that if he dies, we should burry him in his village and also take care of his children…,” he said. He added that Paul Afoko's younger brother has formed a group to protect him anytime he visits the Upper East region. Public Relations Officer of the Upper East Regional Police ASP Thomas Agbanyo confirmed the incident to Joy News and said one of the assailants has been arrested. A sister of Adams Mahama has also told Peace FM she suspected that NPP chairman Paul Afoko had a hand in his brother’s death. Mr. Afoko himself on Adom FM Thursday morning condemned the ghastly attack and want the perpetrators punished for their action. Following his death some agitated youths in the Upper East region have vandalized a car conveying second regional vice chairman of the party. The vice chairman popularly called ‘Borga’ was being driven by an old man when the youth hurled stones and bricks at the car. Police had to fire warning shots to disperse the attackers. The politician is safe and the car is now packed at the mortuary of the Bolgatanga government hospital. |
