Source: GNA - The La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) Saturday undertook a cleanup exercise as part of the National Sanitation Day within Madina and its environs.
The people of the area had by 0600 hours gathered for the exercise and desilted the gutters from
the Ritz junction to the Madina Social Welfare area, as well as from Madina Zongo junction to the Atomic junction.
Some of the voluntary organizations, which took part in the exercise, included the Concerned Citizens of Madina, ATRACO Youthfes and the Face of Madina.
Market women operating from the Madina Central Market also swept their vicinity whilst the Zoom Alliance Compaction truck went round the township collecting the refuse, with the assistance of the staff of the LaNMMA.
Two main refuse dumps at Oyarifa, a suburb of Madina were also cleared by an excavator.
The Madina District Police Command, led by Chief Inspector Stephen Boadi went round all the stores and shops asking its owners to close up and join in the exercise
Those who resisted the instructions of the Madina Police were arrested and sent to the charge-office. The recalcitrant traders remained at the station till the exercise was over and were warned and released.
The LaNMMA hired two tipper trucks, an excavator and a Zoom Alliance Compaction Truck for the exercise. Some of the items supplied by the LaNMMA during the exercise include wheelbarrows, wellington boots, rakes, shovels, hand-gloves and nose masks.
The Member of Parliament for Madina, Alhaji Amadu Sorogoh and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of LaNMMA went round to inspect the exercise.
Speaking to Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Head of Environmental Health of LaNMMA, Mr. Joseph Quacoe said he was satisfied with the attendance and participation and appealed to the people to fully partake in the exercise next month.
He cautioned that, it was an offence not to participate in the national sanitation exercise, in accordance with the Assembly's Bye-Laws, and warned that anyone who fails to participate in the next exercise would be arrested and prosecuted.
