Source: adomonline.com - The recent increase in petroleum products is a necessary evil to ensure constant supply, according to government communications team member, Eric Ametor Quarmyne. He noted that as a people centered government, the Mahama-led administration wants to avert any fuel short in the country. Petroleum products were on Saturday increased by nine per cent. This means a gallon of petrol which hitherto was sold at 13.70 will now be sold at 15 cedis.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Eric Ametor Quarmyne said the increases are for the best interest of Ghanaians. He said even though it was a difficult decision by government, the increment is a “necessary evil”. The NDC man explained that the 9 percent increase is the only way to pay for the under recoveries to guarantee availability of petroleum products. Ametor Quarmyne appealed for calm as government work assiduously to revive the ailing economy. On the contrary, the Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, pooh-poohed Ametor’s claims. In his view, the increment is the nemesis of the IMF bailout conditionality which debars government from subsidizing petroleum products. He blamed the Mahama-led administration for the mismanagement of the economy which has plunged the citizenry into abject poverty. Nana Akomea called on government to be candid with Ghanaians so that they can prepare for the worse. |
